Hi, and welcome back to agenda - got plans?, a newsletter featuring a curated selection of art, design, and fashion events in Berlin. I'm Kate, a freelance journalist, Berlin local, and art/design lover. I hope my newsletter makes it a bit easier for you to navigate through everything this city has to offer.
This week is all about queer culture, open-air fun and … football. I'm not a football fan at all, but there are a few events during the European Championship that are worth attending, even if, like me, you're not really into public viewing.

#1 Fête de la Musique
I know this is no secret or niche event, but I guess it’s a great start to the weekend as the weather is finally showing some mercy. If you’re new to the city and never before heard of this event: Fête de la Musique is an annual open-air festival (Berlin’s largest free festival) with more than 250 locations, where you can enjoy all kinds of music. And if you’re confused about where to go, you can search for genre, part of the city, time, and even venue on the official website.

#2 Doom Spa, New Fears, Turba | Project Space Festival
Project Space Festival (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) is a one-month-long programme consisting of art events at 30 different different venues in Berlin. It is an initiative of the independent visual arts scene in Berlin aiming for more visibility and support and is free of charge.
On Friday, Doom Spa is showing art films by Claudia Zweifel and Tatjana Turanskyj, and on Saturday New Fears is hosting a performance by artists Miiel Feraez, Isu Mignon, Iga Swiesciak and Shy. On Sunday Turba Factory is hosting a workshop and exhibition by artist Mirjana Mitrović.
I visited the opening party of New Fears a few weeks ago and enjoyed the energy and roughness of it. If you‘re into more subcultural happenings, upcoming artists and alternative ways of performance art, I recommend checking some of those happenings out.

#3 أوفسايد الخرطوم (Khartoum Offside) | film screening
As I mentioned, I’m not into football, but some interesting events, talks and screenings are happening during the European Championship, tackling topics like social injustice and women’s rights. One of those screenings is Khartoum Offside by filmmaker Marwa Zein: She follows a group of football-loving, self-confident young women through the Sudanese capital of Khartoum.
Women in Sudan are de facto forbidden from playing football due to a social reality shaped by Sharia law. Despite this, they still get their kicks. Defying numerous instances of police interrogation and government harassment, the charismatic Sara, Hala, and their friends stick to their goal: building a national women’s football team. Along the way, they talk about issues such as the division of the country into two states and discrimination against people from South Sudan.
Marwa Zein spent four and a half years working on her documentary, which premiered at the Berlinale in 2019 and was nominated for the Amnesty International Film Award. You can watch it at HKW on Friday – for free! The filmmaker will be present.

#4 Queer Culture | Kottilesben
Your new favourite queer art network Kottilesben is throwing its first event „Queer Culture“: A day full of art, performances, music and queerness, featuring artists like Goldie333, Sunchild, photographers Sophia Emmerich and Lisa Kempke as well as dancing goddess and performance artist Sophie Yukiko (among many others!). I really hope this will become an event series, as everything about the happening sounds beautiful.

#5 TAF Euro Rooftop Party | Temry and Friends
Another exciting event happening on Sunday: Wrap up the weekend with collective Temry and friends on the rooftop terrace of Amino East Side. This isn‘t a place I would usually recommend, but good events in Berlin do not depend on the location but on the crowd and music, as we all know. I’m sure this will be a beautiful summer party, as Temry & Friends is a party collective focusing on community, fun and being a safer space.

+++ An extra recommendation for people watching the EM: If you‘re still looking for a good public viewing spot, I highly recommend checking out Pridehouse at Poststadion (Berlin-Moabit).
