Agenda Edition #8 / 14.-16.06 / Current mood: Are we still waiting for summer?

Hi, and welcome back to agenda - got plans?, a newsletter featuring a curated selection of art, design, and fashion events in Berlin. I'm Kate, a freelance journalist, Berlin local, and art/design lover. I hope my newsletter makes it a bit easier for you to navigate through everything this city has to offer.

This week, I focuse on smaller events and happenings. It's so important to support cultural spaces besides large art institutions if you ask me. It is key to keep the diversity and independence of the cultural scene alive.

That said, what‘s happening in Berlin this weekend?

  • Spend an evening at Körnerpark and listen to new Anatolian music

  • Try your luck at an open model casting

  • Attend a Finissage at one of my favorite art galleries

  • Do some book shopping on Saturday night

  • Visit a photographer’s open studio on Sunday

#1 Biz Bize | İÇ İÇE Festival Warm-up

Have you ever heard about the İÇ İÇE Festival (Öffnet in neuem Fenster)? It’s the first and only diversely positioned festival for new Anatolian music in Germany. The team is made up of mostly queer and migrantized people who want to celebrate, empower, and further connect their communities with the help of music and art. This year’s festival is completely sold out, but one day before the actual event, the festival crew is inviting people to Biz Bize, an afternoon full of panel talks and music in the Orangerie in Körnerpark Neukölln. Entry is free, but as the festival itself is very popular, I recommend being there early!

Friday, 14.06.2024, 16:30 - 22:00
Location: Orangerie Neukölln, Körnerpark, Berlin-Neukölln

#2 Open Casting | Namilia

Did you ever dream of becoming a model? Maybe it’s your time to shine: Berliner fashion label Namilia is doing an open casting on Friday, inviting all genders, all sizes, and all ages. But be prepared to show a lot of skin if you get chosen as the label is known for it’s club wear and rather less covering clothing.

Friday, 14.06.2024, 12:00 - 15:00
Location: Schlesische Str. 27, 10997 Berlin-Kreuzberg

#3 Finissage Elisabeth Vary | Galerie kajetan

Galerie kajetan is an art gallery in Charlottenburg, which I first explored at this year's “Charlottenwalk” gallery tour. kajetan focuses on so far underrepresented mid-career artists with distinct and strong personal perspectives. I haven’t have a chance to visit their current exhibition by artist Elisabeth Vary yet. She is known for her multi-layered painting pieces, which develop their identity from color, the constructed form, as well as the exhibition space itself and are neither painting nor sculpture.

The finissage is on Saturday evening. There will be a play reading of interviews with the artists John Baldessari and Lawrence Weiner from the current issue of Fair Magazin für Kunst und Sprache (German translation). I would recommend to do a little walk through the neighbourhood beforehand, as the area is full of cute cafés and other art galleries worth checking out. Afterwards, treat yourself to dinner at Japanese Restaurant Momiji (Öffnet in neuem Fenster), Chinese food at Good Friends (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) or boujee fine dining at Pars (Öffnet in neuem Fenster).

Saturday, 15.06, 18:00
Location: Galerie kajetan, Grolmanstraße 58, Berlin-Charlottenburg

#4 Book Shopping & Vernissage | Ivry Books

I’m always complaining that bookstores are closing too early (besides Dussmann) but this Saturday, Ivry Books is doing an exception. The bookstore is hosting the vernissage of artist Anna Zimmermann in the evening, which gives you time to stroll through the bookstore from 18:00 to 20:00 while sipping on some natural wine. I personally love events like this, where you can spontaniously step by. The bookshop is located in between Viktoria Park and Gleisdreieckpark, which means you could combine a visit with an evening stroll through one of the parks. One of my favorite ice cream parlors, Fior di Latte, is also just around the corner.

Saturday, 15.06, 18:00-20:00
Location: Ivry Books, Großbeerenstraße 36, Berlin-Kreuzberg

#5 Open Studio | Photographer Marie-Lisette

French photographer Marie-Lisette (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) is showing her recent work on Sunday at Cropp Studio. Get to know her body of work, which focuses on societal issues, gender, and female embodiment. Marie-Lisette’s pictures have been featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Schön Magazine. RSVP now, and I hope to see you there!

Sunday, 16.06, 18:00 -21:00
Location: Ringbahnstraße 22-30, 12099 Berlin-Tempelhof
