New post on Hohenschönhausen Prison + a 10% discount for Neukölln’s Hüttenpalast…

Dear all,

Our latest website article, published today, is about Berlin’s iniquitous Hohenschönhausen Prison. This place, one of the most feared Stasi institutions—and today an educational memorial—is already mentioned in various articles on our website, including this list of GDR-related sights (Opens in a new window) and a photo series (Opens in a new window) showing its preserved interiors.

For this latest article, Peggy Hughes took a guided tour to get some deeper insights into how the prison operated, the kinds of psychological intimidation that were used, and how its exact location remained a secret despite being fairly central. Although Peggy’s guide was a historian, around half of the guides are actually survivors of the prison and have their own personal tales to share.

In other news, we have also made a deal with one of Berlin’s quiekiest hotels, the Hüttenpalast, to get a 10% discount off any stays. Set off a coutryard in buzzy Neukölln, it consists of pimped-up vintage caravans and wooden chalets set inside two large factory halls.

As well as being pretty much the only interesting hotel in Neukölln, the owners are very friendly and unpretentious, and the prices are very reasonable even without a discount. They also have more traditional double rooms, large and comfortable by Berlin’s standards and the breakfast spread is decent too. You can watch the reel we made on Instagram (Opens in a new window) to catch the vibe, or head to their website (Opens in a new window). To claim the discount, just send them an email and ask to apply the code: slowtravelberlin.

Finally, since I am planning to make our posts and offers more frequent, and I am aware that this could quickly become ‘spam’ (especially for those of you not based in Berlin), I will start shifting these mails to Steady’s Newsletter option rather than abusing this email function. So if you want in, please sign up at the link below as the mail outs from now on will be via that method.

Many thanks, chat soon and please do send any feedback any time on what you might want to see more (or less) of on the website and social media channels.

Thanks to each of you, as always, for keeping this project going.
