Why Media Needs to Change, and How You Can Help
Hey dolls,
As supporters of Polyester, you’re probably already aware that we stick out a bit on the British media landscape.
In British journalism, 88% of writers are white, 73% are upper class and 67% are cis men – and on top of all of this, only three companies run 90% of the UK press.
Polyester is run exclusively by women from working class backgrounds, and prioritises commissioning work only from marginalised creatives. Over a three month sample, 88% of our writers were working class, 89% identified as queer, 95% were non male, and 44% were people of colour. The more people who sign up to support us, the more we can continue to platform these voices, typically excluded in the media, across our outputs,
This is where you come in: our community is our greatest asset, so spreading the word about Polyester, and encouraging others to become members too, means we can do even more work to spotlight the unseen perspectives that have vanishingly few platforms within the media.
If you love what we do, please consider sharing your favourite Dollhouse piece, or our campaigns (Abre numa nova janela) (or both) with people you know who might enjoy it too – we rely hugely on memberships to keep going, and we’d love to welcome more amazing readers into the fold.
We’re so grateful for all your support!
XOXO,
The Polyester Team
