The editorial principles, and our first story

-- French and Italian version below --

“Let's see how we can work together around issues that know no borders”

(Lucille Guiheneuf - founding member, Brittany-France)

A clear mission-statement, shared by all.

Over the past few days we’ve been busy working on a document that we can’t wait to share with all of the community (and we’ll do so very soon): the editorial policy. This is a collaborative operation which aims to provide structure for ereb’s journalistic standards, and guidelines as to how relationships between the editors, photographers, journalists and members of the community will function. Here too, the final document will be the result of community contributions. Over the next week, all members will be able to look at the various clauses and leave feedback, comments and suggestions.

At the end of this editing process, and discussion with members, this document will serve as a compass to guide the journalists and photographers that will work with ereb in the coming months.

Our first report: and the winner is…

This week we asked our members to choose their preferred topic out of the following four options that our editors proposed, all in line with suggestions from the community:

  • As Alexander Lukashenko continues to restrict the freedom of his people, tens of thousands of Belarussians are migrating to the EU with work permits. How many of them are actually using this document, which is easier to obtain than an asylum request, as a means of fleeing the oppression?

  • Brexit is finally done. Now reports are coming in of Europeans being detained by authorities upon arrival in the UK. Brexit was never about trade, but identities. Borders are making a comeback. Has Englishness become a nativist issue? Is the British dream over?

  • In May a Dutch court ordered Shell to cut their CO2 emissions by 45%. This was just the latest of several recent cases in which activists and NGOs in Europe have brought multinational corporations and states to court for issues related to the climate crisis. But can they really hold such big companies accountable for the harm they are causing to the environment? Are they actually succeeding? How can corporations (and states) bypass rulings from the courts? And will the switch away from fossil fuels also be achieved by pressure from big investors, as in the Shell case?

  • Due to unresolved diplomatic tensions between Morocco and Spain, thousands of migrants have been trying to reach Europe through the autonomous city of Ceuta. But what is life in Ceuta actually like? What work are civil society organisations doing on the ground to provide first aid to migrants? And what is the EU’s role in the region?

To find out which of the above themes was chosen to be at the centre of our first ereb report, tune in to Road to ereb (Opens in a new window) this Friday 4 June at 17.00 CET when all will be revealed.

(Lucille Guiheneuf - membre fondateur, Bretagne-France)

(Lucille Guiheneuf - membro fondatore, Brittany-Francia)

Il primo reportage di ereb: and the winner is...

Ci stanno riuscendo? Come?
