WTF Is Onboarding?

This week, the BRICKS team explains what happens when you join a new company or start a new role, and shares their tips for integrating well into a new workplace.

Starting a new role can be daunting – we’ve previously spoken about social etiquette (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) in creative workplaces and about tackling imposter syndrome (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) in new environments. Today, I wanted to share a bit about the process of joining a new company or business and integrating into your new role, which is also known as onboarding.

Onboarding is the process of integrating new hires into the workplace, helping them understand their work environment and company culture, and making them feel welcome. It's crucial as it helps new hires reach productivity faster, improves employee retention, and is particularly important for welcoming and integrating remote employees and interns.

It’s essential for your success in your new role to integrate effectively into your environment. It’s no wonder that poor onboarding has been revealed as the leading reason why over ¼ of new starters in the UK quit their jobs within the first three months (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) – if you don’t feel well-equipped and that you have someone you can talk to or ask questions, it can easily lead to low-confidence in the role and feeling unsupported by your team.
