“Obey or end up in jail”

Dear reader,

This is a sneak peek of our weekly round-up from Greece.

The government passed a new penal code, which is considered ultra-conservative. Among other things, the law increases minimum sentences and duration of incarceration for misdemeanors. All opposition, the Hellenic League for Human Rights and the Hellenic Criminal Bar Association, expressed strong reservations.

Eight environmental organizations are calling on the Greek government (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) to withdraw some controversial provisions from the coastal zones bill, which was tabled in a parliamentary committee this week. The bill reportedly erodes environmental protections and supposedly sets a national policy for climate resilience.

SYRIZA is collapsing with a bang. Ex-party leader Tsipras practically called for an election process to either give a vote of confidence for the leader or elect a new one. Current leader Kasselakis picked up the glove. The following day, a report revealed Kasselakis owns a company abroad. This is forbidden by Greek law and punished even with incarceration.

Last week, we shared our weekly roundup to its full extent so you get an idea of how it looks and feels. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to do this on a more regular basis because we also need to pay the bills. This is why we are asking you to click the button below and join our international community.

Thanks for considering this,

The AL team
