The Fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (or BJJ) is a Martial Art based on the notion that a smaller and weaker opponent can overcome a larger, stronger and even more aggressive opponent through the use of technique. Anyone can learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, there are no special physical characteristics necessary in order to train and technique is based on leverage and timing as opposed to physical strength. jiu jitsu classes for kids (Abre numa nova janela)
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu evolved from Japanese Judo when Mitsuyo Maeda taught the Gracie family of Brazil early in the 20th century. The Gracie family further sought to refine the art by removing many of the strength-based techniques and by testing their art in a number of challenge matches against other styles. The Gracie family's brand of Jiu Jitsu gained worldwide popularity through the first Ultimate Fighting Championships, where their grappling based style proved to be dominant to the more widely popular striking based martial arts.
While BJJ is sometimes thought of as primarily a grappling art or even specifically a ground fighting art, it is actually a complete system of self-defense. Today, people from all backgrounds start learning for many reasons, including self-defense, fitness, sport as well as the fun and camaraderie that comes from training at a Martial Arts Academy. kids bjj classes (Abre numa nova janela)
While there an array of situations that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be applied and an array of sophisticated techniques that have evolved over the years, at its core the principle is that any practitioner should be able to perform the Fundamental Techniques. The guidelines when applying BJJ can be summarized by Safety, Position, and Finish. Safety describes the practitioner's first priority is keeping themselves from being forced to give up or injured to gravely to continue fighting. Position is important in terms of giving one combatant or the other the advantage of keeping themselves safe and offering more opportunities to finish their opponent. Finish in BJJ usually refers to submission holds, including chokes, strangulations and major joint manipulations, but can actually refer to anyone way to exit the encounter in a victorious manner.
A large part of the practicality of learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the emphasis of drilling and sparring. Techniques are never learned in isolation, a large part of development is learning to work against various resistances of opponents. It has been said to advance your level in BJJ, it is not about learning a series of new and fancy techniques, but rather how well you can apply your Fundamentals against an increasingly experienced opponent. kids jiu jitsu program (Abre numa nova janela)
