Rat sniffs out landmines - in record numbers, Japan builds the world's first 3D-printed train station

Hello dear Good News community,

Today I was impressed by Ronin - a giant hamster rat. A small animal that does big things: since 2021, Ronin has detected 109 landmines and 15 other potentially lethal remnants of war in Cambodia. It will be on duty for another two years before it retires. A story that shows what animals and humans can achieve together.

Little hero: rat sniffs out landmines - in record numbers

The giant hamster rat Ronin has set a new world record for sniffing out landmines in Cambodia. According to aid organization Apopo, it has sniffed out 109 landmines and 15 other potentially deadly remnants of war since 2021. She was entered in the Guinness Book of World Records for this achievement. Source: CNN

Young scientists win Earth Prize Europe for water filters

19-year-old Anna Podmanická from Slovakia and 18-year-old Tomáš Čermák from the Czech Republic have won the Earth Prize Europe. Their unique filter device called PURA can remove pollutants and antibiotic-resistant bacteria from water. With the win, the two scientists will receive a grant of 100,000 US dollars, personal mentoring and learning resources. Source: EURONEWS

For less animal pain: electric carriages in Alcúdia

After two years of preparation, the Mallorcan town of Alcúdia is introducing electric carriages. They are due to go into regular service from the coming vacation season and replace horse-drawn carriages in the long term. New tree species discovered in Tanzania - up to 3,000 years old

A group of botanists has discovered a new species of rainforest tree in the Udzungwa Mountains in Tanzania. A total of around 100 mature trees were found. According to first estimates, some of them could be up to 3,000 years old. A reforestation project in the area aims to protect the trees. Source: MONGABAY
