Child mortality drastically reduced in India, Finland shuts down its last coal-fired power plant

Hello dear Good News community,

My favorite good news stories are always the ones that focus on animals. That’s one of the reasons I’ve been eating a plant-based diet for over five years. And today, there are once again two great pieces of news from the animal world: Biodiversity in Tanzania is set to be strengthened through a new conservation program, and the world’s largest wildlife crossing is nearing completion.

India: Child mortality drastically reduced

Child mortality in India has fallen by 70 percent since 2000, according to a new UN report. This has been made possible by targeted education, better nutrition and free warm meals in state schools. Source: BUSINESS STANDARD

Finland's last coal-fired power plant has been shut down. The energy company Helen Oy declared that this marks the end of the coal era in Finland. The shutdown will reduce the country's CO2 emissions by two percent. Source: REUTERS

Ireland: How surplus energy is being used to combat energy poverty

In Ireland, a project to use surplus renewable energy was launched in 2023. Since then, the surplus energy has been used to provide free hot water for households at risk of energy poverty. Soon to be completed - the world's largest wildlife crossing

The world's largest wildlife crossing - the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing - is nearing completion. The overpass stretches across California's 101 freeway and is designed to help bobcats, mountain lions, deer and other animals safely cross the busy, ten-lane road. Source: ECOWATCH
