Maximalism, whimsy and camp are words you wouldn’t ever associate with Chantal Akerman, if, like me, you’re more familiar with the austere formal rigour, the palpable loneliness and isolation of her more popular work. But in 1986, Akerman gifted us an infectious musical à la Jacques Demy, called Golden Eighties, which has had a 4K restoration and will be screening at the BFI’s major Akerman season, as well as other venues across the UK (including Ciné Lumière, the ICA and Glasgow Film Theatre).
