Matt Smith in conversation with the Bowes Museum

FROM JOSÉPHINE BOWES Trendsetters and Trailblazers, the current exhibition at the Bowes Museum, celebrates the 200th anniversary and artistic vision of museum co-founder, Joséphine Bowes. On until 29 June 2025, Crafts Council is excited to offer members an online discussion event to learn more about the exhibition and go behind the scenes with the Bowes Museum team.

We warmly invite members to hear the multi-disciplinary artist Matt Smith in conversation with the Bowes Museum. The event is staged in the context of the exhibition which features a work by Matt Smith Study in Pink & Gray, currently on loan from Crafts Council Collection. We are delighted to host Matt and the Bowes team as they explores the subject of craft in the Museum’s Collection. The panel will further explore the pioneering role of Joséphine Bowes, co-founder of the Museum, and how her remarkable understanding of artistic trends and cross-genre approach to collecting might have shaped the collection today.
