Tempti Railway Crash: One Year Later, Victims Still Await Justice
Dear Member,
This is our weekly round-up from Greece.
It’s been one year since the deadly train collision happened on Tuesday, 28 February 2023, at 23.21 in Tempi, Central Greece. An accident that deeply shocked the country and left 57 people dead -one is still missing- and dozens more traumatized physically and psychologically.
One year after “the biggest train accident in Greece’s history” (as the Panhellenic Rail Workers Federation head Ioannis Nitsas had then said (Si apre in una nuova finestra)), little has been done for rail safety. At the same time, nobody but the ‘fatal’ stationmaster has been punished.
One year later, the “Tempi” Transport Minister is still an MP enjoying parliamentary immunity, while the government has made a mockery of the Parliamentary Investigative Committee. Furthermore, they try to obscure that Justice cannot prosecute MPs. The Parliament could, but they rejected setting up the appropriate committee.
One year later, there has been no Justice for the victims and their mourning families.
The weekly round-up newsletter provides a comprehensive and deeply investigative look into the tragic event that occurred one year ago, leaving 57 people dead and exposing systemic failures in railway safety, government accountability, and justice for victims and their families.
These points underscore the importance of becoming a member to access the full weekly roundup, as it offers:
1. In-depth Investigations: The newsletter goes beyond surface-level reporting, providing detailed investigations into the causes of the crash, the aftermath, and the systemic failures that allowed such a tragedy to occur. It presents findings from independent expert investigations initiated by the victims' families, revealing new evidence and challenging official narratives.
2. Accountability and Justice Efforts: Members get insight into the ongoing struggle for justice and accountability, including the legal actions taken by victims' families, the manipulation of evidence by authorities, and the lack of meaningful safety improvements in the railway system.
3. Critical Analysis: The newsletter critically examines government responses, including the actions of specific ministers and officials, parliamentary inquiries, and the broader systemic issues that contribute to a lack of safety and accountability in public infrastructure projects.
4. Community and Advocacy: By becoming a member, subscribers not only stay informed but also join a community advocating for change, safety, and justice. The newsletter covers efforts to mobilize public support, including petitions and public demonstrations, providing a platform for collective action.
5. Comprehensive Coverage: Members receive a holistic view of the event's impact, including human stories, legal battles, and political developments. This coverage is crucial for understanding the broader implications of the crash on Greek society and the ongoing efforts to prevent such tragedies in the future.
In essence, becoming a member to access the full weekly roundup is not just about staying informed; it's about supporting investigative journalism, contributing to the pursuit of justice, and participating in a community that demands accountability and safety improvements. It's an opportunity to be part of a meaningful dialogue and action that can lead to real change.
