A recommendation: Dune: Part Two

Long live the fighters!” Now playing in theaters worldwide is Dune: Part Two, the highly anticipated sequel in Denis Villeneuve’s big screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi novel Dune. It’s a truly extraordinary cinematic experience! This is what movies are all about! This is how grand and exhilarating and emotional and spectacular they can be when made by a master of visuals and stories! Villeneuve has given us two amazing movies so far in the Dune series, and if he completes Dune: Messiah next, this trilogy will instantly join the ranks alongside Lord of the Rings and The Godfather as one of the best trilogies ever made. Dune: Part Two continues right where Dune (from 2021) left off - following the story of Paul Atreides (starring Timothée Chalamet) (who becomes known as “Muad'Dib”) and Chani (co-starring Zendaya) as they fight on behalf of the Fremen on the desert planet Arrakis. This is where they harvest spice, which is the important resource in the entire galaxy. This sci-fi story digs much deeper into the mythology of Dune and the Bene Gesserit, and explores complex moral issues regarding fate and destiny, faith and belief in “the one”, control and power, family, love, and much more. Critics have been giving it rave reviews, audiences are buzzing, this is the kind of awesome movie that is a must watch in theaters to be a part of this moment in cinema history.

The question on everyone’s minds going in – is Dune: Part Two even better than Part One? Does director Denis Villeneuve do the novel justice? Join the debate! Maybe you will like it more, maybe not? Either way, it’s proper movie theater experience. The scope and scale is off the charts epic and exhilarating. This is proper event cinema - I was blown away by the IMAX experience. I believe we need an empowering revolutionary movie like this in the world right now. I stand with the Fremen of Arrakis! But clearly Paul has other plans… Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya give two all-timer performances, each one digging incredibly deep into their emotions for this intense and heartbreaking story. I also think both Rebecca Ferguson and Javier Bardem are superb, handling their roles with the right gravitas. However, I do think I prefer Dune: Part One more than Part Two (having rewatched it in IMAX a few weeks prior). This will be a trilogy as good as Lord of the Rings in the end (we need Part Three ASAP!), and as with that trilogy, The Two Towers is my least favorite of the three. However, there is still so much to love about this movie, so much to admire. From the VFX to the sound design to the intensity to all the costumes to the supremely dark twist in the third act. I will go see it again right away.
