Towards the Open Piano(ide)

Square Piano, Tafelklavier

For a quite a while now I had this lose and vague idea of

a minimalist quiet open source "Pianoid" electro-accoustic tabletop keyboard instrument :

  • silent / quiet, with contact mics or magnetic pickups

  • small, lightweight, portable

  • simplest action possible (Viennese mechanism or perhaps something simpler)

  • simple sustainable materials:

  • all parts lasercut wood and lasercut steel (if required), no 3D printing required

  • easy and fast assembly, no crafty tooling or workshop required

  • low cost to "no budget"

  • 4-5 octaves

  • no built in preamp

  • easy to tune and maintain

desired sonic properties:

  • silent / quiet

  • strong dynamic timbre variation

  • reverberant sustain option (pedal or lever, mechanical springs, etc.)

  • "deep" evolving single note sound

but lacking any crafty skills and tools and workspace, I had no idea how to initiate such a project.

Further thinking about the details and the inspiration I got from various sources lead back to the roots and to the much simpler concept of the HaptiClavier.
