Progressive Photography Show Livorno

May 9-11, 2025, Livorno, Italy

On the weekend, I was invited to the Livorno Progressive Photo Festival. I am there as a guest speaker, lead a photo walk, organise a photo slam, and exhibit a photo in the group exhibition.

Contemplative Photography

Contemplative photography is the art of mindful seeing. It is based on an inner attitude of openness, presence, and non-judgment. The focus is not on a 'good picture,' but on a moment of genuine perception. You encounter the world without manipulating or interpreting it – and capture this moment photographically.

I'm holding a workshop on contemplative photography in Frankfurt on June 24 and 25, 2025, in German.

Criteria for a Contemplative Image

1. Presence in the moment

• The image was created from a genuine moment of seeing.

• It conveys the stillness and concentration of that moment.

2. Simple, clear imagery

• The photo is reduced – not cluttered.

• Only the essentials are visible. No effects, no distractions.

3. No staging

• The subject was not arranged or prepared.

• It was captured as it appeared – honestly and directly.

4. Perception instead of interpretation

• The image shows what is – not what it is supposed to mean.

• It works through direct experience, not through symbolism.

5. Mindfulness instead of intention

• The moment arose without intention.

• The gaze was open, curious, alert – not focused on an outcome.

Stylistic Ideas:

• Motion Blur

• Empty Space

• Minimalism

• Abstract

A contemplative image...

...doesn't show the world.

...doesn't show an object.

...shows seeing itself – in a quiet, waking moment.

And that can happen anywhere: on the street, in a park, by the river, at a window, on a train platform, in the forest...

Kontemplative Fotografie

Kontemplative Fotografie ist die Kunst des achtsamen Sehens. Sie basiert auf einer inneren Haltung von Offenheit, Präsenz und Nicht-Bewertung. Im Fokus steht nicht das 'gute Bild', sondern ein Moment der echten Wahrnehmung. Man begegnet der Welt, ohne sie zu manipulieren oder zu interpretieren – und hält diesen Moment fotografisch fest.

Ich mache am 24+25 Juni 2025 einen Workshop in Frankfurt über kontemplative Fotografie:

Kriterien für ein kontemplatives Bild

1.    Präsenz im Moment

• Das Bild ist aus einem echten Moment des Sehens entstanden.

• Es trägt die Stille und Konzentration dieses Augenblicks.

2.    Einfache, klare Bildsprache

• Das Foto ist reduziert – nicht überladen.

• Nur das Wesentliche ist sichtbar. Keine Effekte, keine Ablenkung.

3.    Keine Inszenierung

• Das Motiv wurde nicht arrangiert oder vorbereitet.

• Es wurde so aufgenommen, wie es sich gezeigt hat – ehrlich und direkt.

4.    Wahrnehmung statt Interpretation

• Das Bild zeigt, was ist – nicht, was es bedeuten soll.

• Es wirkt durch direkte Erfahrung, nicht durch Symbolik.

5.    Achtsamkeit statt Absicht

• Der Moment entstand ohne Absicht.

• Der Blick war offen, neugierig, wach – nicht auf ein Ergebnis fokussiert. 

Stilmittel:

• Bewegungsunschärfe

• Der leere Raum

• Minimalismus

• Abstrakt

Ein kontemplatives Bild...

… zeigt nicht die Welt.
… zeigt nicht ein Objekt.
… zeigt das Sehen selbst – in einem ruhigen, wachen Moment.
Und das kann überall passieren: auf der Straße, im Park, am Fluss, am Fenster, auf einem Bahnsteig, im Wald...
