We’ve Upskilled Enough.

I recently read the UK Government’s “The Buckland Review of Autism Employment: report and recommendations”, released in February 2024.

Overall I think that this report is largely a good thing for the Autistic community. There are many references to elements of the recruitment process and working environment that are the responsibility of employers to change. This makes a stark change from other “official” reports and analysis of Autism, which are often still stuck in a medical-model framework.

There was however one thing that weighed on my mind for a couple of days after reading the report. That is the persistent references to equipping autistic people to have  “the skills needed to maintain effective job performance”.
