One of my favourite facts about Sofia Coppola is that she shares her birthday with George Lucas, a close friend of her father’s. Eleanor Coppola recalls in her autobiography a dinner with Lucas, while she was heavily pregnant with Sofia, at which the director joked that she might be born on his birthday.

The stars did in fact align. Some 28 years later, Sofia would appear briefly in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, as one of Queen Padmé Amidala's handmaidens. This small piece of trivia illustrates a wider point about the Coppola family, and the relationship they have with other creative forces in the film industry; they’re a dynasty, yes, but one who champion collaboration and camaraderie.
