River

When I close my eyes I still see the river.
I never felt alone.
Right by your side.
Nights of staring into my past.
Night of staring into my future.
Even when you just stood still,
I still felt what you meant to me.

River, river from the past.
Please stay with me in my thoughts.
You always made me happy.
When I saw you, I always smiled.

Rushing through the streets of Florence.
Rushing past the statues.
Macchiavelli, Galileo, Leonardo -
watching me walk by.

I walk faster and faster and faster
are you still there?
When will I see you again?

River, river of my thoughts.
My tears mixed with your water.
My past solved in your drops.
When I first saw you,
I felt like this was my place.
Right by your side.
Looking up to the bridge.

I walk, I run, through the streets of Florence.
Past the cathedral, past David and the Uffizi.
I run to you.
My love, are you still there?

And every day of my life I wonder
what would you tell me tonight?

River, river of my love.
We met when I was 19.
I grew up standing by your side.
I met you as a child and left you as a man.

River, river by the bridge.
If I could just see you again.
What would you tell me tonight?
What would I see in your water tonight?
