Cheese, animals, people - life.

Cheese, animals, people - their stories. Beyond borders and prejudices, told by a free and independent voice.

I've been working as a freelancer since 2001, writing about food, wine, and life, as it unfolds through them: people and their stories. Cheese has become my special field and very close to my heart and soul. I'm increasingly aware how cheese has the potential to connect people, overcoming many borders and prejudices. And that is important to me. That is why I travel so much and write about what I see and hear and learn, in magazines, in books, and here online.

The more we know about each other, the less prone we are to fall for propaganda and demagogues, under whichever slogan or name they might show their ugly heads…

I've been working continually on this website for over five years, independently, ad-free, and hopefully without any preconceptions. I travel to meet producers, see their farms, stables and alpine dairies, look into cheese vats and caves, smell and listen. Because it is on site and in the field, with people and animals, that the real connections and relations become visible. I'd like to continue doing this and do even more of it, without depending on "big money" or so-called "influencers" who invariably show us only selected facets of the larger picture. Therefore: if you enjoy browsing these pages, if you appreciate my work and find it valuable, I'd be grateful for your financial support. It could be as small as a bite of cheese and a cup of coffee, or larger, like a whole wheel, a contribution to the next ticket to travel... And should you already be supporting me, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

And yes, occasionally I do accept invitations for press trips, but I only use them for research. There is too much PR talk in this world as it is. Anything you'll find on this website is 100% my own opinion and conviction. Full stop. No compromises. Financially that's not always easy, but it matters. Which is why - see above. This format of direct support is an experiment. My gut feeling (which has led me to many exciting cheeses and, all things considered, through life) tells me that it will work, that there are enough of you out there…

„Cheese is a wonderful guiding star. It not only made me see Germany through new eyes but also took me to the outmost corners of Europe, up north to the Lofoten, to Ireland where the Atlantic and dry land become one, to Sicily and Sardinia where Africa seems to hang in the air, and to the east of Anatolia where Europe melts into Asia. Cheese made me travel the west coast of north America and visit the Northeast of Vermont, I've seen landscapes previously unknown to me and others from a completely new perspective. I've met wonderful people and understood underlying connections from a fresh point of view.

Since 2014 I've been running the monthly Heinzelcheese-Talks, when we sit around a large table at Markthalle Neun in Berlin-Kreuzberg, tasting and discussing cheese (and wine). These meetings originated in my desire to share the cheeses, often unusual and rare, which I bring back from my travels. It was at that table that I understood what a wonderful tool cheese represents, how it has the potential to liberate us from many stereotypes and prejudices, spread by public media and politicians. When I put Turkish cheese on the small wooden boards, I first do so without any comment at all. It's only when the cheese made it to everybody's mind and reached the soul through all the senses, that I follow up with the relevant information. Again and again then I watch how a switch is flipped: Turkey, that means not only the faces in the news, but people, and in this case people who make cheese..." (from my next book, so far in German only, Vom Käsemachen, Insel October 2018)
