Our Latest Member Spotlights

Welcome to our second spotlight newsletter! We have such a talented community of creatives on our Learner Platform, so we thought it would be an amazing idea to start shouting about them. Each month, we’ll introduce you to some of our members in hope you can collaborate, connect and of course, follow their journey.

Alex Murphy is a photographer from South London, living in Bristol who's work predominantly documents the queer community. With a love for shooting film and capturing someone's essence in their portrait - their style, confidence, attitude, piercing eyes, the tattoos through the mesh of their shirt and the outfit they safety pinned together.

What they’re looking for:

I’m looking for photography work for magazines, queer events, musicians and brands. Also looking for studio assistant and photographers assistant roles. I’d love to collaborate with models, stylists and other LGBTQ+ creatives.

As a German-based photographer and communication design student with Vietnamese roots, Luisa started on her photographic journey only a year ago. In this relatively short time, she’s discovered a joy and passion for visually capturing the inspiring beauty and complexity of the people around her, as well as the character of our young generation. Her recent projects explore themes of identity and BiPoC realities, aiming not only to connect her to the stories of others and her relationship with them but also to explore and understand her own experiences growing up as a BiPoC person in Germany.

What she’s looking for:

Photographers, stylists, set designers, creative directors who share a passion for editorial approaches and thrive on experimenting with lights and visual storytelling, and BiPoC artists.

Becki/Hold My Hand is an artist specialising in sculptural nail art. Taking inspiration from the land, sea and the surreal. She’s most interested in blending the natural with the unnatural, from dried flowers, moss and hair, to creating claws, sculpted teeth and even spaghetti hoops. “Nail art is an extension of yourself, quite literally. It is another way to express who you are - even if only for a few weeks or a day.” She is recently started to create pieces of jewellery using nails, including charms and necklaces made of nails that are typically seen as ‘unwearable’. She’s also interested in the interpersonal relationships between the nail artist and client, this is something she explore through writing.

What she’s looking for:

I am primarily looking for work in the editorial world of nails - working on shoots for magazines and collaborating with artists to create nails for them for videos, shows etc.  I have only just moved to London from Glasgow and it’s a world that is completely new to me so I would love to be connected with people who have experience in the industry.  I am also interested in writing, not just about nails, but on a range of topics - previously I’ve worked in campaigns and comms for third sector organisations in public transport and Scottish independence.

Samantha Sponer is a fat, queer, interdisciplinary artist and great advocate of the colour purple. Living in the United States, Samantha studied at Tufts University where they received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor's in Civic Studies. The body and its emotions inform the majority of their art practice especially concerning the topics of desirability and fuckability. Discrimination on the basis of body is Samantha’s primary objective in art making in the hopes that their work can serve to educate and sway the public to humanise fat bodies. In the near future, they hope to get their master's degree in the fine arts and transform all spaces into fat friendly spaces. Samantha hopes to heal the world with art and shall continue working towards a more purple future.

What they’re looking for:

I write, illustrate, and publish my own zines which I sell at a local bookstore here in Las Vegas. My goal in the near future is to compile my writing as an anthology and publish that as a proper book. Anyone who loves bookmaking, funny poetry, and bold illustration I invite you to connect! I have been loving distributing my art and writing through zines, and I am always looking for more opportunities to apply to as well as building a broader ‘zinester’ community. Additionally, I am pursuing a certificate in graphic design, so that eventually I can work in the design and fine arts industry as both an artist and a professional.
