RR+: Tolkienian storm names 2024-2025
Keeping fingers crossed for everyone suffering from these storms!
Every year the Met Office (UK), Met Éireann (Ireland), and KNMI (Netherlands) come together to determine names for the coming storm season, usually September to August.
This storm season fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works might pick up on some names that may sound familiar.
Bert. Possibly not immediately apparent but he is one of the three trolls (Opens in a new window) Bilbo, the dwarves, and Gandalf encounter in the Hobbit.
Éowyn. Shieldmaiden of Rohan (Opens in a new window), sister of Éomer, slayer of the Witch-king of Angmar, Lady of Ithilien. [This will be the next named storm after Darragh (Opens in a new window).]
Hugo. Boffin (Opens in a new window) or Bracegirdle (Opens in a new window).
Poppy. Either Poppy Chubb-Baggins (Opens in a new window) (she was at Bilbo’s Farewell Party) or s very prominent member of the Harfoots of the Second Age (Opens in a new window).
How are storms in Europe named?
Do have a look at the Met Office’s website (Opens in a new window) for more information.
Here is a map to illustrate who’s who.
Please note This is intended to be a humorous post and is not claiming these names - except for Éowyn - have to be inspired by Tolkien. 😅
