Greece's Shift to Far-Right Evident in Election Results
Dear reader,
This is our weekly round-up from Greece in bullet points.
Ruling ND received 13% fewer votes than in the 2023 national elections. Following the European trend, far-right and alt-right parties benefited from this discontent with the government. Progressive and leftist parties did not manage to persuade citizens that they could improve their lives.
Despite the large sums of money New Democracy poured into political advertisement, it did not achieve the expected results. Of all European political parties, ND came second only to Orban’s Fidesz (Hungary) in the total amount spent on advertisement only on Google. At the same time, ND’s debt was 435 million as of 2022.
Food inflation was the main concern as Greece headed to the polls, yet the ruling and opposition parties’ leaders focused on a sword fight over their own (big) fortunes. Generally, the pre-election debate emphasized primarily national issues, not European ones.
