As the first magazine for European Ideas, Are We Europe brings you journalism from the next European generation. We all know Europe is a rich patchwork of cultures and identities — now we’re bringing those stories directly to your feed.
Why we do what we do
'Europe is boring' How is Europe talked about in the news? We only hear about Brussels, Brexit and breaking news which, let’s face it, are boring to most. If Europe is covered, it's often through a national lens. We want to bring you only the most exciting, unexpected, and underreported stories about Europe that go beyond borders. 'Europe has no future' And when news coverage about Europe isn’t boring, it is almost always negative. Euro… crisis. Migrant… crisis. Democratic… crisis. Where are the stories that offer constructive critique and sensible solutions to the problems our continent is facing? 'Europe is divided'
National divisions are a reality, and the mainstream news already reflects that.
But many of us live, love, work and travel across borders. That’s why our stories feature people, places and stories about the culture, power and places we have in common.
Our three projects
Our independent European journalism can be put into three projects:
1. Print Magazine
A beautifully illustrated quarterly magazine, filled with the stories we mentioned above, as well as powerful photography and graphic elements, taking on the European landscape as a whole. Politics, culture, deeply reported places that pick apart a certain place or problem, unapologetic social critique: you will get long-form analysis of where the hell it is all going.
2. Special Series We love making special series. These will be thematic stories from underreported places, about surprising topics, from all over the continent. Podcasts, illustrations, mini-documentaries, long-reads and more.
3. Special Multimedia Projects Imagine getting interactive and immersive stories from Moldova, Armenia, Greece and Greenland. That’s exactly what our “Edges of Europe” project does: we select the most talented local storytellers from a different underreported region in Europe each time, set up a pop-up newsroom and produce an immersive multimedia story from scratch in seven days.
To do that, we developed our own method—the Story Design Sprint—to make that happen. Our multimedia story on democracy in Moldova was nominated for the 2019 European Press Prize’s innovation award, in a category alongside Reuters, El Pais and Le Monde.
