Edition #6 / 30.05-02.06 / Current mood: I choose the wrong weekend to be out of town

Hi, and welcome back to agenda - got plans?, a newsletter featuring a curated selection of art, design and fashion events in Berlin. I'm Kate, a freelance journalist, Berlin local and art/design lover. I hope my newsletter makes it a bit easier for you to navigate through everything this city has to offer. Nothing is sponsored. Every event I recommend I plan to attend myself or would suggest to a good friend.

That said, I am unfortunately not in Berlin this weekend, but I highly suggest the following:

  • One of my favorite photographers is coming to C/O

  • Create your own jewelry at Platte Berlin

  • If you’re into photography attend a photography fair

  • Check out UdK’s art prize winners

… read until the end for some design markets and a pop-up happening this weekend!

#1 Jewelry Workshop by Genevieve the Label at Platte Berlin

If you're into sustainable fashion and unique accessories, don't miss the jewelry workshop by Genevieve the Label at Platte Berlin on Thursday night. The workshop focuses on creating your own earrings using repurposed materials. The jeweler will guide you through the process of transforming vintage materials into beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces. I love the idea and hope to attend one of her workshops in the future.

Thursday, 30.05, 16:00-19:00
Location: Platte Berlin, Memhardstraße 8, 10178 Berlin-Mitte
Free admission, registration required

#2 Tyler Mitchell at C/O Berlin

I’m crying over this one: Renowned photographer Tyler Mitchell is bringing his much-anticipated exhibition Wish This Was Real to C/O Berlin. Known for his vibrant and culturally rich portraits Mitchell's work often explores themes of identity, race, and youth culture. If you haven’t heard of him: He is the first African-American in the 126-year history of US-Vogue to ever photograph a cover for the magazine, which was no other than Beyoncé in 2018!

The opening night of his exhibition at C/O promises to be a captivating event with the possiblity of meeting the artist himself (yes, he will attend the event!)

Friday, 31.05 20:00 -00:00
Location: C/O Berlin, Hardenbergstraße 22-24, 10623 Berlin-Charlottenburg Free admission, more info

Live-Podcast with Tyler Mitchell x Die ZEIT

… in case you won’t make it on Friday or fear the crowds (relatable), how about attending an artist talk with Tyler Mitchell on Sunday? As part of the exhibition Wish This Was Real, Christoph Amend and Ubin Eoh from DIE ZEIT will host a live podcast with Tyler Mitchell.

I’m usually not the biggest fan of their podcast “Und was machst du am Wochenende?“ (And what do you do at the weekend?), but with Tyler Mitchell as a podcast guest I certainly will be happy to listen to it. They will talk about his weekend routines and the weekends of his childhood, his artistic role models, his favorite books, films, series, and songs, about his first solo exhibition in Germany, his collaboration with stars from Beyoncé to Sandra Hüller – and about his vision for a different America. The admission is 12 € but you will receive a ticket that allows you to visit the exhibition for the entire duration, which sounds more than fair.

Sunday, 01.06, 16:00 -17:30
Location: Delphi Filmpalast, Kantstr. 12a, 10623 Berlin-Charlottenburg
Tickets: 12€ (get them online, remaining tickets until 15:30 also available at the box office at C/O Berlin)

#3 UdK Berlin Art Award

I was thinking of a good description of UdK (University of the Arts) for someone new to the city, but nothing feels quite extensive enough. There are so many clichés (often true), so much to say about this university. If you have ever dated or meet someone attending it, you know what I am talking about (and I certainly don’t mean this in an offensive way!)

Anyways! This weekend, you are invited to celebrate the creativity and talent of the students with the opening reception of the UdK Berlin Art Award. This event marks the beginning of a two-day exhibition showcasing the works of emerging artists. The exhibition offers a glimpse into the future of contemporary art through diverse mediums and styles, admission is free!

Exhibition: 31.05 – 01.06.2024

If you are a photographer or thinking of becoming one, check out „Schau! Fotomesse 2024“. This little photo fair is held by my favorite Berliner photoshop (I bought all my lenses here and their printing service is amazing as well). They will offer a check and clean for cameras, there will be workshops and photo walks.
