Using notepads for business

Having a notepad with your logo and contact details on it is a great alternative to fliers and even business cards – or as a supplemental tool to both. Plus, in A6 size it can be used as a compliment slip – helping you cut down on another form of stationery. As an A5 it can be used for business meetings and conferences.

Whereas a flyer might be looked at once, a notelet or notepad is used constantly over a longer period of time, serving as a regular reminder of your business name and details or advertising message.

I own a printing business (mainly commercial/industrial/medical) and I have used these with great success for many years – both to generate additional sales from my existing clients and as an inexpensive form of advertising and promotion. Here are some uses that have benefited me:

  • As a gift to thank existing clients for orders above a certain value. Around      80% of the time the client ends up ordering some pads for themselves!      (Double positive!). I also give it at random to clients who’ve been with      me for a significant amount of time.

  • I leave pads lying at whatever outlet is relevant to my products and will be      frequented by my target customers.

  • I sponsor pads for conferences or workshops attended by my target market      audience. I also give some to whatever groups hold regular meetings or      get-togethers, where the members are relevant to my type of business. For      example, local Chambers of Commerce or relevant clubs.

  • I promote specials by including a specific sales message on the pads. For      example, when I want to promote the print of gift certificates I advertise      the special on notelets and leave pads with as many hair and beauty salons      as I can reach. (Just be sure to include a closing date for the promo).  A month or two later I’ll target another market segment.

One need not distribute an entire pad every time – if the pad consists of 100 gummed sheets you can simply pull off what you think is needed for a specific purpose (notelets are bound into pads using a flexible gumming compound and not ordinary glue, so they won’t fall apart when handled or separated into smaller pads). For instance, a B & B could tear off a pack of 10 or 20 sheets per room. Or, a business could pull off a pack of 20 sheets for one kind of customer and 50 sheets for another.

You can also get the sheets printed on multicolour paper, much the well known Post-It pads. Another option is to have them spiral bound, although that will cost more.

Yet another option is to order complete notelet boxes and have the cut sheets printed with your message. There is a huge cost premium, however, and probably only worth spending on your best clients.

To keep costs as low as you can, plan what all you would like to use these notelets for – a variety of special offers, events, generic gifts, gummed and spiral bound – and get printing quotes for getting them all done at the same time.

The Business Card Booster is a practical guide that can help anyone make their business cards work more effectively. From planning what must be included on your card to getting it distributed as widely as possible, this book is suitable for any size of company and an essential guide for graphic designers and print shops.

Still more topics include printing options, traditional vs online printing, when to use a photo on a card, what to print on the rear and how to use colour effectively.

Business card etiquette - both in routine card hand-out situations as well when traveling abroad – are also covered.
