Print-On-Demand: Generating Passive Income
Hey, you've probably heard of Print-On-Demand before, maybe you even have some experience with it. When you search for the term, you'll find at least a thousand videos explaining how to make immense profits with minimal effort. Today, this blog post will break down the process for you.
Let's start with the basics. It's important to plan ahead and consider each step before diving in blindly. Without proper planning, you might end up in chaos or unable to take action.
But what if you're new to this field and don't know the steps? Don't worry, you can use this blog post as a guide. I have personally established my own "fashion brand" with Print-On-Demand, so I can share my experiences and provide you with insights on what to focus on and what to avoid.
First, let's consider the overall process, which can be seen as a business plan. At the beginning, you need to decide what product you want to print and offer. There are countless products available for Print-On-Demand. For example, you can start by printing custom phone cases and market them through social media. Alternatively, you can print and sell items such as pillows, blankets, hoodies, water bottles, posters, and more.
The choice is yours, but it's important to research the profit margins and production time/delivery estimates for the products. You can usually find this information directly on the platforms. For my fashion brand, I used the platform Printful (Öffnet in neuem Fenster)*. Additionally, there are numerous other Print-On-Demand platforms available, such as Redbubble, Society6, Merch by Amazon, Teespring, and many more.
The great thing about Print-On-Demand is that you don't have to buy or store the products or handle shipping. There are platforms that take care of everything for you. The process involves creating designs for your chosen product and making them available for purchase. When a customer buys your product, the Print-On-Demand platform prints, packs, and ships it to the customer. Even returns can be handled by the platform, allowing them to be stored for a small fee and easily shipped again with your next sale. This means you don't have to worry about being stuck with excess inventory.
Once you've chosen a product and reviewed the profit margins, you need to decide how you'll create the designs. With platforms like Printful (Öffnet in neuem Fenster)*, you can use free template designs, but I strongly advise against it as they often lack quality and appealing design.
So, how should you create your designs? Ultimately, it's up to you. If you're proficient with Photoshop, that's great, as you already have the perfect tools for creating high-quality designs. However, if you're like me and don't have experience with design platforms, you can use services like Canva.
When it comes to design, consider the genre you want to focus on. Whether it's quotes on mugs, skull designs on t-shirts, or cartoon animals on pillows, the choice is yours. However, I recommend finding a niche for your products. If you simply have a red t-shirt with a few stripes, it will be challenging to stand out in the market. Try to narrow down your focus as much as possible. For example, you could design mugs with positive affirmations or quotes. Many people have successfully grown social media channels with such themes, garnering hundreds of thousands of followers. Alternatively, you could design t-shirts for anglers with illustrations of fish species or fishing-related slogans. The possibilities are endless, so be creative!
Now that you've selected a product, a platform, and created your designs, let's move on to the next step: how can you make your products available for purchase?
Creating a website nowadays is quite simple. With platforms like Shopify, you can easily set up your own website within 1-3 days without any assistance. These platforms offer a user-friendly interface that makes the process much easier.
I personally used Shopify to create my website. I started by taking advantage of the trial period to build the website, and then I opted for the most affordable subscription plan as it was more than sufficient for my needs.
The great thing is that if you choose a platform like Printful (Öffnet in neuem Fenster)*, you can download a free Printful app from the Shopify app store. This allows you to seamlessly import your Printful products directly into your website, including descriptions and images. Speaking of images, you can also use Printful's mockup generator. This tool allows you to easily showcase your designs on various models and download the images, so you have product visuals without having to order the products or arrange photoshoots.
However, I would still strongly recommend ordering your products first before selling them to catch any potential errors or issues before they lead to returns due to, for example, major graphic flaws.
Now, back to the website. If you encounter any difficulties during the creation of your Shopify site, you can simply search for tutorials on YouTube. There are thousands of them available. Additionally, Shopify has its own forums where you can chat with other users if you prefer that over watching videos.
So, by now, you should have chosen a product, a niche, and a platform, and you should have already designed your own small website where your products are available for purchase. I cannot provide legal advice, but I would recommend having legal texts such as terms and conditions and return policies in place to avoid any unpleasant surprises. It would also be best to consider having a professional privacy policy and terms of service created or purchasing them, but that is entirely up to you.
Once you have taken care of all these aspects, the only thing standing between you and passive income is marketing. Now, you need to think about how to sell and promote your products, how to introduce them to the market, and make them known.
There are two main methods to consider: paid advertising and free advertising. The choice between the two is up to you.
Let's say you decide to go with paid advertising. In that case, you should start by creating an Instagram account and a Facebook account for your product because these platforms will be used to showcase your ads. Once you've created your accounts, ask your friends and family to like and follow them. This will make it easier for you to run ads in the future since Facebook/Instagram frequently review accounts for potential bots or suspicious activity.
If they suspect any issues, they might suspend your account repeatedly, which can harm the quality and cost of your ads. Therefore, I recommend building up your accounts a bit first before starting with advertising. Explaining the entire process of running Facebook/Instagram ads would exceed the scope here as it is a complex topic. I strongly advise you to watch many tutorial videos on YouTube before you actually begin. You can also see what your competitors are advertising and draw inspiration from that.
Method 2 is free advertising, and this option is more suitable for beginners because there is less room for mistakes, and it won't cost you anything if any mistakes occur. But what exactly do I mean by free advertising? It means increasing your reach through organic growth. For example, create social media channels for your product and regularly post new content related to it. This will help you gain more reach and attract potential buyers. When creating posts, you can also use Canva, which I recommended earlier in this article as a design tool. Quality is important, but don't be too much of a perfectionist. It's better to have a solid posting schedule and upload a good post every other day than to upload a perfect post every two weeks.
In these posts, you can introduce your products and highlight their advantages, whether it's exceptional quality, sustainability, or simply a unique and creative design. You can also create videos showcasing your products being used. For example, if you have printed pillows, you could show how soft and fluffy they are. You could write something like, "Ever since I got this pillow, my cat won't sleep anywhere else. It's just so cozy!" These types of posts can also appeal to specific niches, such as pet owners.
One relatively new tool you can use to create stunning videos for social media is Pictory (Öffnet in neuem Fenster)*. It's an AI-powered tool that can be quite helpful. While we're on the topic, integrating AI tools like ChatGPT can greatly simplify your work. You can always ask ChatGPT for ideas or inspiration for advertising texts.
Another method for free advertising is affiliate marketing. You can promote your product through affiliates, meaning other people will have a specific link to advertise your products. When someone makes a purchase through their link, the affiliate receives a small commission or a percentage of the sale from you. This way, you can have others promote your products for you and only pay them when you make a sale. It's a win-win situation. If you're interested in this topic, definitely watch tutorial videos on YouTube or read forum posts to learn more about it.
Now that you have all the important information to start building your print-on-demand business and potentially create a limitless passive income, the amount of work remaining is almost negligible. Create and upload a few social media posts regularly, which you can even pre-plan and automate. Keep an eye on your orders and returns. You might also manage a few affiliates, and that's about it. Once you have established this business model, a little bit of hustle and consistently posting new videos and posts for a few months, or even just a few weeks, will be all it takes to expand your audience and make your business almost unstoppable to the point where you won't have to work anymore because you can hire people to take care of your business while you sit back and check on it from time to time.
