Interview with with Niño Divino by Margaret Munchheimer
Darwin Winklaar, a.k.a. Niño Divino, represents a 21st-century artistic kalokagathia, embodying the archetype of a contemporary artist who is not only multi-disciplinary in mediums like fashion, music, and performance, but also deeply engaged in reinventing and reclaiming cultural heritage to inspire and build communities. What sparks one's attention when looking at Divino's work is the strong and resonant voice actively reclaiming their identity, courageously confronting the dilemma of what to leave behind and what to retain in the modern world where the indigenous, the mythical, and the spiritual have been stripped away from everyday life.

What sorcery is this? 1/2
Two-part essay by Tiiu Meiner
Amidst the growing uncertainty of our times and a world that often feels disenchanting, there exists a captivating refuge—the timeless realms of mythology. It is here that designers find solace and inspiration, drawing from ancient tales of myth and magic to navigate the complexities of contemporary culture. Throughout history, mythology has wielded a profound influence in shaping and challenging established orders. Similarly, three visionary designers—Maxime Buono, SORCERER, and Joanne Burke—chart their own paths guided by these enduring narratives.
Writes Tiiu Meiner (Öffnet in neuem Fenster), an Estonian curator and writer based in Rotterdam. In her work she particularly focusses on language as a material and the design of narratives about nature and social hierarchies.
This article is part of a larger exploratory series called Urban Mythology commissioned by Current Obsession. The theme blends personal mythology and modernised traditions to present a new take on identity, oral history, and symbolic language.
