20. In the end, what else is there but work?

In software development, it’s a struggle not to get caught in the pop culture current of the day. Platform developers are anchored by their work. Even if an established framework or platform falls out of fashion, it will still have legacy users for as long as those apps or services are maintained. But the rest of the community doesn’t have the same anchor. Developers routinely hop between jobs. Every new workplace and project is an opening for the pop culture tide to grab you with a new trend. You get so enmeshed with the culture that you become one of the drivers constantly pushing for the new.
