It’s difficult to know when a creative project is ‘done’, and none more so, in my opinion, than a magazine. Comprising so many individual pieces of work made by countless contributors across hundreds of pages, the final finishing touches can feel never-ending. While working on our latest print, #14 The Resilience Issue, I envisioned sending the completed InDesign PDFs as my finish point. But is a magazine done when it’s sent to print? For our team, the to-do lists continued, as we started marketing the magazine, arranging our launch party, and scheduling each piece of content for online publishing and social sharing.
All of this is to say, it can feel unclear when to mark the end of a print project, but running our office open days has felt like the final final step in that process. As an independent publishing team, there is truly nothing more gratifying than seeing our issue in the hands of enthusiastic future readers. To everyone who came to the office to pick up their copy, and chatted with our team, we want to express our sincere gratitude – we couldn’t make BRICKS without you!
During the BRICKS Office Open Days, we’ve been chatting to hundreds of BRICKS readers and Learner Platform members about their work and their experiences entering and navigating the creative industries. There were many excellent questions and conversations had, as well as peer support given, and we wanted to share some of the most common queries and concerns with our Learner Platform members in the hope this advice will be insightful to you all, regardless of your creative specialism.
Below, we share some of the most frequently asked questions from our open days.
