Artist talk, African Book Festival and 48h in Neukölln

Himmel, darauf der Schriftzug “Agenda - got plans?”

Agenda Edition #10 / 28.-30.06 / Current mood: It’s getting hot

Hi, and welcome back to agenda - got plans?, a newsletter featuring a curated selection of art, design, and fashion events in Berlin. I'm Kate, a freelance journalist, Berlin local, and art/design lover. I hope my newsletter makes it a bit easier for you to navigate through everything this city has to offer.

Apparently this week Thursday and Friday are the dates for cultural happenings. Get yourself some rest on Saturday and Sunday because next week is fashion week!

That said, what‘s happening in Berlin this weekend?

  • Explore the art scene of Neukölln

  • Listen to a free art lecture

  • Get some books at the African Book Festival

  • Dance under the sun

#1 Free lecture at Neue Nationalgalerie about queer desire

If you’re interested in queer culture and enjoy art lectures, this could be a great event for you: Join Neue Nationalgalerie for a free lecture by art historian, queer activist and professor of practice at the University of Pennsylvania Jonathan D. Katz. He will give a lecture about "Andy Warhol's Queer Desire and the Denial of Difference" on Thursday night. Entry is free to all exhibitions that evening as well, so start by visiting the exhibitions and join the lecture at 20:00.

Thursday, 27.06, 20:00

Location: Neue Nationalgalerie

#2 Ellen Alien | Berlin Beats

Ellen Alien is one of my favorite Berlin-based techno DJs (and in the game for more than 20 years, proofing age is nothing but a number). You can listen to her set for free at this week’s edition of the open-air rave “Berlin Beats” at Hamburger Bahnhof. Be there early, as I’m sure it will get very crowded!

Thursday, 27.06, 19:00-22:00

Location: Hamburger Bahnhof, Invalidenstraße 50, 10557 Berlin

#3 Artists in Conversation | KOW Talk

I recommended the current exhibition in KOW a few weeks ago (I went there during Gallery Weekend). If you hadn’t had a chance to visit, there’s an artist talk happening on Thursday evening.

Thursday, 27.06, 19:00

Location: KOW Gallery, Lindenstraße 35, 10969 Berlin

#4 “Cityscape Couture” by Julian Larger | Vernissage

If you’re up for some art, I recommend checking out “48 h Neukölln” this weekend. It’s Berlin’s biggest free art festival, a two day cultural happening taking place all over the district. I always enjoy strolling around the streets and exploring little galleries and art happenings along the way. If you have limited time, simply browse through the program on the official website and pick a few favorites, for example the exhibition opening of artist Julian Langer: The multidisciplinary exhibition “Cityscape Couture” shows profiles taken in front of famous architectural sites of Berlin's urban landscape, such as Berghain or Gropiusstadt, and poses questions about their social anchoring.

Vernissage on Friday 28.06, 19:00

Location: DreiFlaschen, Böhmische Str. 48, 12055 Berlin-Neukölln

#5 Hoe_Mies x Porzellan Bar | Funkhaus 🪩

If you’re up for some dancing but not in the mood for Berghain, get your hands on a ticket for the upcoming hoe_mies x Porzellan Bar party at Funkhaus. The collective hoe_mies started a few years ago aiming to diversify Berlin’s hip hop party scene and to provide a safer space for Flinta and BIPOC folks.

Friday, 28.06, 22:00-08:00

Location: Funkhaus, Nalepastraße 18, 12459 Berlin

+++ Extra tipp: if you’re looking for some new books for your summer vacation, check out African Book Festival. This year, the festival focuses on African and Afro-diasporic authors from the LGBTQI+ community and showcasing literature in which homosexuality and queerness play a role. Enjoy readings, discussions, music and poetry performances. The program is accompanied by a large outdoor market offering a variety of food, goods and, of course, plenty of books. Friday to Sunday, 28.-30.06, more info (Si apre in una nuova finestra) +++
