Low Culture Podcast: January 2023

Despite the best efforts of Vader the dog and Luke’s son causing havoc with the Reverend, tQ’s co-editors bring you the first podcast of 2023. They reflect on Christmas past, John describing how Underworld are the ideal sonic accompaniment to a cheese coma, and why  Bruce Willis in Die Hard reminds him of Jason from Sleaford Mods in mannerisms and more. That done, they get on with looking into the best culture they’ve heard from the year just born. Luke recommends you head to your local cinema this month to go and see Mark Jenkin’s new film Enys Men, an innovative film that’s beautifully shot and sparsely scripted as it explores how the mind can become its own worst enemy when you’re alone in nature. John recommends Kevin ‘Strictly Kev’ Foakes’ book on the history of psychedelic light wheel shows of the 1960s and 70s, exploring how the rise of these intricate machines coincided with the appearance of LSD outside the clinical environment and into art shows, and then rock gigs. Along the way we find out that John went to see Ozric Tentacles live – who knew?! We then have a bit of a jump back into last year and have a chat about SAS: Rogue Heroes, with John recommending Steven Knight’s Locke along the way.
