Empathy and Photography

I recently listened to Joachim Feigl's podcast "Empathy and Photography" (in German). The photo artist Loredana Nemes talked about the fine sense of portraiture, about faces, gazes, and proximity. But what exactly is empathy, and what does it have to do with photography?

Empathy helps me look more closely. Not just at people, but also at urban spaces. When I ask myself: How is this person feeling right now? What does this place mean?, my perspective changes. I wait longer, choose the moment more consciously, and notice details that would otherwise be lost.

The result: images that touch.

Empathy is not a technique - it is an attitude. And it often makes the difference between a quick snapshot and a powerful photo.

How Empathy Improves Your Images

You see more, because you are not looking through the person, but toward them. This becomes visible in a portrait: the posture, the expression, the light on the skin – it does not emerge through technique, but through relationship. Even if it remains wordless.

You photograph more precisely because you choose more carefully what you want to show.

Empathy is like an inner filter: You sense which scenes carry real emotion, and which are empty, even though they look spectacular. You tell more – because you allow your own resonance.

Empathy allows you to be touched. This emotional vibration is reflected in the image: in the composition, the focus, the crop. The photos become denser, more truthful, closer.

Empathie und Fotografie

Kürzlich habe ich den Podcast “Empathie und Fotografie“ von Joachim Feigl gehört. Die Fotokünstlerin Loredana Nemes sprach darin über das feine Gespür beim Porträtieren, über Gesichter, Blicke, Nähe. Aber was ist eigentlich Empathie und was hat sie mit dem Fotografieren zu tun?

Empathie hilft mir, näher hinzusehen. Nicht nur auf Menschen, sondern auch auf ihre Spuren, zum Beispiel im Stadtraum. Wenn ich mich frage: Wie fühlt sich der Mensch gerade? Was bedeutet dieser Ort?, verändert sich mein Blick. Ich warte länger, wähle bewusster den Moment, nehme Details wahr, die sonst untergehen.

Das Ergebnis: Bilder, die berühren.

Empathie ist keine Technik – sie ist eine Haltung. Und sie macht oft den Unterschied zwischen einem schnellen Schnappschuss und einem starken Foto.

Wie Empathie deine Bilder besser macht

Du siehst mehr – weil du nicht durch den Menschen hindurch, sondern zu ihm hin schaust.
In einem Porträt wird das sichtbar: Die Haltung, der Ausdruck, das Licht auf der Haut – es ergibt sich nicht durch Technik, sondern durch Beziehung. Auch wenn sie wortlos bleibt.
Du fotografierst präziser – weil du achtsamer wählst, was du zeigen willst.
Empathie ist wie ein innerer Filter: Du spürst, welche Szene ein echtes Gefühl trägt – und welche leer ist, obwohl sie spektakulär aussieht.
Du erzählst mehr – weil du deine eigene Resonanz zulässt.
Empathie erlaubt, dass du berührt bist. Diese emotionale Schwingung zeigt sich im Bild: in der Komposition, im Fokus, im Ausschnitt. Die Fotos werden dichter, wahrhaftiger, näher.
