courts made history with two major rulings for the environment and animal welfare. In France, a court blocked a motorway project for the first time to protect nature. Meanwhile, in Mexico, the Supreme Court ordered better care for zoo elephant Ely, setting a new precedent for animal rights. Billions for species conservation

Fewer people smoking worldwide - millions of lives saved
The WHO has been fighting tobacco consumption for 20 years - with success: global consumption of cigarettes, chewing tobacco and snuff has fallen by a third. Seven million people die every year from tobacco and a further 1.3 million from passive smoking. The WHO warns that e-cigarettes are not a safe alternative. Source: AL JAZEERA

For environmental reasons: Motorway project in France overturned
For the first time, a French court has overturned a major road construction project on environmental grounds: The planned A69 motorway between Toulouse and Castres would do more harm to the environment than good for the region, according to the ruling. Study: The more species-rich a forest, the more CO2 it can bind
Mixed forests consist of different tree species. Compared to monocultures, i.e. forests with only one tree species, they bind significantly more carbon dioxide. In a historic ruling, Mexico's Supreme Court has ordered a zoo to improve the health and living conditions of Ely the elephant.
