Agenda Edition #18 / 29.08 - 01.09 / Current mood: Books and movies

Hi, and welcome back to agenda - got plans?, a newsletter featuring a curated selection of art, design, and fashion events in Berlin. I'm Kate, a freelance journalist, Berlin local, and art lover. I hope my newsletter makes it a bit easier for you to navigate everything this city has to offer.

How are you? I know, the week just started, but this week’s edition features some events on Wednesday and Thursday that I don’t want you to miss out on. That said, here are my picks of the week for you:

  • Visit the Pop-Kultur Festival

  • Get your hands on new books at the Taschen Book Sale

  • Check out the Rhi Darcey pop-up

  • Enjoy an open-air art video screening

#1 Taschen Books Sale

Did somebody say coffee table books? Taschen is throwing its biannual warehouse sale this week! Prepare for 25% to 75% off. I recommend checking out their pre-sale on Wednesday to snag some of the best books before everyone else arrives. Unfortunately, I’m out of town, otherwise, I’d be shopping for gifts for friends.

Taschen Sale
Wednesday, 11:00 - 20:00; Thursday to Saturday, 11:00 - 19:00
Location: Taschen Store, Schlüterstraße 39, 10629 Berlin

#2 Pop-Kultur Festival

In my opinion, the Pop-Kultur Festival is one of the greatest events in Berlin. It combines concerts, panel talks, readings, live podcasts, and much more. Last year, I attended a beautiful reading of “Im Morgen wächst ein Birnbaum” by Fikri Anıl Altıntaş, and it was truly memorable.

This year, my highlights include a live broadcast (Opens in a new window) of "Fashion the Gaze," one of my favorite podcasts (Thursday, 29.8., 19:40 – 20:40, Haus für Poesie), as well as concerts by Berlin-based rapper futurbae (Opens in a new window) (Thursday, 29.8., 22:00 – 23:00, Palais) and musician Zebra Katz (Opens in a new window) (Friday, 30.8., 21:40 – 22:30, Frannz Club).

#3 Talking books at C/O Berlin

Another promising book event you shouldn't miss this week: C/O Berlin is hosting the second edition of its "Talking Books" event series. In the relaxed atmosphere of the C/O Berlin Café, local bookstores present their favorite books, publishers and photographers showcase their latest projects, and experts engage with the audience in discussions about the many facets of the relationship between photography and books.

This time, the event is held in collaboration with the Hopscotch Reading Room (Opens in a new window), an English-language bookstore focused on anti-colonial, non-Western, diasporic, and queer perspectives. Three experts in Afro-German literature will present books that offer reflections on contemporary photography from an Afro-German perspective.

Talking Books x Hopscotch Reading Room
Thursday, 29.08, 19:00–21:00
Location: C/O Berlin Café, Hardenbergstraße 22-24, 10623 Berlin
First come, first serve (free admission)

#4 Open Air Video Art & Artist Talk | Simon(e) Jaikiriuma Paetau

Are you up for some video art this weekend? The Berlinische Galerie is hosting a free open-air cinema evening, combined with an artist talk, showcasing the work of Simon(e) Jaikiriuma Paetau. In their work, this German-Colombian artist focuses on exploring decolonial themes and queer cultures. The Berlinische Galerie is screening three of Paetau's works, each envisioning utopias of resistance against heteronormative and (post-)colonial structures.

Open Air Video Art & Artist Talk
Friday, 30.08, 18:30 - 23:00
Free admission
In front of Berlinische Galerie, Alte Jakobstrasse 124 - 128, 10969 Berlin
