Over a year ago at Tax2Tech 2023 in Berlin, we asked ourselves: What's the next big thing in TaxTech? Looking back, it's clear: the electronic invoice! More clearly formulated: The obligation to receive and send electronic invoices between companies in Germany.

eInvoicing in Germany

At least in the finance and tax bubble, everyone has been talking about it for a few months now. The mandatory receipt of e-invoices in Germany as a business starts in 2025. From 2028, we will be out of the woods. So far, so simple.

What is happening in the rest of the EU?

We are increasingly reading about adjustments, postponements and revisions in other EU countries. Thus, we have taken this as an opportunity to summarize the relevant dates so that you at least have the eight largest EU economies on your radar.

As you can see, the obligations are not as big an issue for all countries as they are for us. In the Netherlands and Sweden, there are at least no 'compulsory measures' in the short term. However, this is also due, for example, to the fact that the natural spread of electronic invoices is already much more widespread in these countries than is the case in Germany.

Further harmonization at EU level with regard to electronic invoices and any reporting obligations await us from the 2030s.
