STB Newsletter 2025 #3

Good morning all,

Today is the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Berlin, a monumental event that saw the final defences of the Nazis overrun by the incoming Red Army.

To mark the anniversary, we have published a new article (S'ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre) that looks at some of the damage that’s still visible around the city—some of it informal, some officially preserved—and provides a list of spots where interested visitors can find it.

You can also read a timeline of this dramatic battle here (S'ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre) and an eye-witness report here (S'ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre).

In non-war-related news, we published a long-read last month that traces the development of the local literary scene over the last couple of hundred years. It’s adapted from our 2015 book “Berlin: A Literary Guide For Travellers” and you can find it here (S'ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre).

And to celebrate the arrival of spring, we updated our Spring Guide here (S'ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre).

Tour updates—our Prenzlauer Berg and Literary Tours (S'ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre) are both running more regularly now that the weather has broken, so do drop us a line if you or your friends would like to join—we will offer a discount of course.

Talking of discounts, Kreuzberg’s plant-based restaurant HAPPA (S'ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre), which serves up honest, hearty vegan cuisine in a friendly and welcoming environment and an impressive zero-waste policy, is offering an exclusive 10% discount for our subscribers on their delicious five-course menu. Just enter the code SLOWHAPPA when booking—note that it’s only valid until 30th of April so you’ll need to be quick.

And a reminder too, that if you or your friends have any plans to visit Berlin soon, you can still claim a 20% discount at one of the Circus (S'ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)venues (hostel, hotel or apartments) by using the code SLOWTRAVEL when booking; and 10% off at Neukölln’s unique Hüttenpalast (S'ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)—vintage caravans and wooden chalets set inside two large factory halls—by sending them an email and ask to apply the code “slowtravelberlin”.

Many thanks, as always, for supporting what we do. I’ll be in touch soon with more articles, news and discounts.

Paul
