ULEZ expansion: High Court challenge can go ahead

A judge has ruled that a challenge to the proposed expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) can go ahead in the High Court as there are valid legal arguments to be heard.
The zone, which requires some vehicles to pay a charge to enter, is due to be expanded to all London boroughs from 29 August, bringing it to the edge of Surrey.
Surrey and a number of other councils are challenging Transport for London and the Mayor's decision to enlarge the zone. Grounds for that challenge include the decision process used and a failure to consult on scrappage schemes.

Chinese and British exhibition at Reigate library

A "Chinese and British" exhibition is running at Reigate library until Saturday 22 April.
The free display from the British library reflects on the long history of Chinese communities in the UK, using photographs, manuscripts and interviews with those who have lived through it.
"Join us to celebrate the history and lasting legacy of this vibrant community, and to understand what it really means to be Chinese and British," says Reigate library.
A number of events are taking place, including a showcase of the game Mah Jong this Saturday (15 April), and a free screening of a film on Chinese and British food stories next Saturday (22 April).

Reigate resident takes on London marathon to raise funds for Amnesty

Kate Wescott, a Reigate resident, is taking on this year’s London Marathon, and calling on the Surrey community to donate what they can to help Amnesty International protect people world-wide by defending their right to freedom, trust and dignity.
She’s hoping to raise £2,000 for the human rights charity, which she chose because of the work it does to champion girls' and women's rights.
Kate, 32, is a former Surrey English teacher currently working at Voice 21, a national children's oracy charity in London.
A familiar face at park runs in Reigate and Dorking, she has run the London Marathon once before, four years ago. However, a pre-existing injury meant she had to hobble through the course, relying on the cheers and applause of family and friends to get her round.
That time, Kate ran for Alzheimer's Research UK, raising just over £2,000 in memory of her grandmother, who suffered from memory loss before passing away.
This year, stronger and injury-free, Kate is determined to tackle the 26.2 miles again, although she believes the mental battle will be more significant than the physical one.

Beer & curry night with naan-sourced lager
Crumbs, the Reigate-based business that turns unused bread into beer, is hosting a beer & curry night at the Surrey Tasting Rooms in Church Street on the evening of Thursday 4 May.
There'll be the chance to enjoy their new "Naan Laager" (made using unsold naan bread) alongside Indian food from chef and writer Hari Ghotra.

Churchill invites local people to coronation tea party
Churchill Retirement Living is inviting people to a tea party at its Colebrooke Lodge development, in Prices Lane, Reigate, on Thursday afternoon, 20 April, in advance of the forthcoming coronation of King Charles III.
