🕺🏿TEAM RECOMMENDATIONS🕺🏿

FOUNDER OF POLYESTER, IONE GAMBLE

OBJECT: Murano glass handbag. So we’ve all seen the Coperni glass bag (S'ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre) as worn by Doja cat recently. It’s sent me down a rabbit hole of Murano glass bags and I just got one on eBay for so cheap!! Don’t think I can actually wear it out though lol

TV: Woodstock 99. If you’re a festival person don’t watch this because you will literally never want to go to one again. Absolutely harrowing and anxiety inducing doc about the ill-fated relaunch of Woodstock in 1999. Looked like hell on Earth ! Terrifying! But also definitely worth watching to see how corporate greed can create actual danger and how important creating safer environments is.

Article: https://defector.com/the-money-is-in-all-the-wrong-places/

If you got dragged into the Sydney sweeney is poor twitter discourse a couple of weeks ago this one is for you. Such a thoughtful, nuanced piece on nepotism in Hollywood and who can afford to be an artist. Can’t stop thinking about it!!

COMMUNITY EDITOR, HALIMA JIBRIL

TV: The Resort! It’s all about these 2 teens who go missing on holiday and 15 years later this couple stumble upon the clues to find them. It’s soooo fucking GOOD. I love Skyler Gisondo!!!

FILM: Nope by Jordan Peele. Such a brilliant movie, it was scary but not too scary and the storyline was just so engaging. Also love that you could see all the black actors in the dark lol. Lighting and shots were just spectacular.

MUSIC: I’m still listening to Surrender by Maggie Rogers. Angel from above!!!!

BOOKS: Tomorrow Sex Will Be Good Again by Katherine Angel. This book is my bible!!!!!!

DEPUTY EDITOR, GINA TONIC

FILM: Finally watched The Eyes of Tammy Faye and I finally can concede she did deserve the Oscar over Kristen haha. A bit cheesy but when are biopics not?

TV: I've just started Severance and it's blown my head off!! It's quite a Lot though so make sure you're in the head space for a head blag. I can only manage two episodes at once.

MUSIC: Megan Thee Stallion's new album goes OFFFFF this has been an excellent time for music between Bey, Lizzo, Meg and the new Nicki song. I have truly been fed.

JUNIOR EDITOR, CHARLOTTE LANDRUM

FILM: Twilight. Hear me out, after the heat wave we got a nice bit of rain and I just thought omg, I'm in my Bella Swan era. I can't stop thinking about moving to Forks and wearing converse:( Not listening to Muse tho

MUSIC: I've been non stop listening to the Alex G single Runner since it was released last month. I'm ready for this album. Also the new Nicki single of course

ISSEY GLADSON, CREATIVE PRODUCER

BOOK: There are more things Yara Rodriguez Fowler

I bought this book after seeing Yara speak at a festival and it’s the best book I’ve read all year. The novel is centred around sisterhood, queerness and political revolution, set in the backdrop of London in 2016 and Brazil during the military dictatorship. As well as her work as a writer, Yara is also a political organiser and this is felt so clearly through the book as she outlines the way in which political systems have failed marginalised people and gestures towards a different path. It’s been nominated for the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction 2022 and if you need any more convincing the book contains the most wonderful suggestions of music to listen to as you read certain segments of it!

FILM: Summer of 85 Francois Ozon

One of my favourite films has finally made it onto MUBI UK! Summer of 85 is a gorgeous queer romance set along the French coastline. Think of it as a French ‘Call Me By Your Name’ with a soundtrack that includes Rod Stewart and The Cure!

MUSIC: Wish, The Cure

And speaking of The Cure, there’s something about the end of summer that never fails to push me into a The Cure listening frenzy. August hits and its Robert Smith or nothing.

Maybe by this point in summer I’m just sick of the love island-esque summer music or maybe I just like feeling a bit naughty listening to such melancholic music during a season where happiness is forced down our throats. Last august the fixation was Disintegration but this summer its Wish that’s been blasting through my headphones, I guess it’s been especially fun this summer to return to the roots of our current post-punk revival in music.

CULTURE EDITOR, MISHA MN

MUSIC: Today Q Lazzarus died so I will be listening to nothing but Goodbye Horses for the foreseeable future, and any other output from her that there is on Spotify, which, if memory serves, is not much.

TV: Been rewatching some Queer Eye episodes because it’s comforting and I really love seeing Antoni cry when there is anything to do with fraught mother-son relationships. I can clock mommy issues from across continents, girl.

FILM: Finally did my second viewing of the Suspiria remake and I think I liked it even more. Great soundtrack, loved Tilda Swinton’s Pina Bausch inspired costuming and Jessica Harper’s emotional cameo. Still don’t know why Tilda played the old man too though.

EDEN YOUNG, SOCIALS EDITOR

MUSIC: can’t stop listening to this song by my very talented pals. moody misty summer evening vibes - https://open.spotify.com/album/0n5Jclk6ZduSgYKihqaguO?si=zvZpOqMgRz-_7xXYOlaudA

TV:  just started watching that league of their own tv show and it’s so good! nice bit of fluff about a womens baseball team in the 40s directed by jamie babbitt who did but i’m a cheerleader! extremely gay, lots of lesbians drinking martinis wearing gorgeous outfits and stars abbi from broad city. nice easy watching

FILM: i’m clearly in a moody summer mood because i rewatched control, the film about joy division, and it’s truly a masterpiece. recommend if you want a beautifully shot slice of manchester history and to be totally depressed

C ya soooon 🥰

XOXO,

Charlotte ❤️
