🕺🏿TEAM RECOMMENDATIONS🕺🏿
FOUNDER OF POLYESTER, IONE GAMBLE
BOOK: I'm Glad My Mom Died - I know this has already been soooo hyped but I'm late to the party, just finished it, and absolutely loved it. Loads of the endorsements highlight how much grace Jennette shows in writing her experiences with parental abuse, eating disorders, etc, but I think a lot of them miss just how compelling the writing is. The book rarely veers into trauma porn IMO and instead offers us a rare glimpse into living under impossibly difficult circumstances that is as hopeful as it is truthful. I LOVE HER!! Can't wait to read everything she ever writes.
Silo: This Apple TV show is a banger, don't want to say too much or spoil it, but if you loved Severance you will love this.
Selling Sunset: NEW SEASON SLAPS!!! The drama is next level!!!!! We miss you Christine but Chrishe
DEPUTY EDITOR, GINA TONIC
Life Ceremony by Sayaka Murata - Was deeply let down by the last two fiction books I read but this short story collection from the author of Convenience Store Woman and Earthlings has restored me!! I love short stories so much and these are the perfect level of dystopian twist that I love from Murata - definitely grab it for your hols.
Search Party - Finally finished this and oh my god what a ride. Each season could be a limited series in itself tbh!!
Hackers (1995) - A perfect encapsulation of late 90s/early 00s approach to tech with a baby Angelina Jolie and Jonny Lee Miller leading the way. Deffo think this influenced The Matrix aesthetics and was fun to watch a film from this era that is so heavily set in that time period.
MANAGING EDITOR, EDEN YOUNG
TV: Jury Duty - this was SO GOODAMN GOOD! started off with kind of nefarious Nathan for You/Eric Andre vibes but ends with some of the sweetest most wholesome tv moments i've ever seen. Basically they're filming a documentary about what its like being on a jury but plot twist: everyone's an actor apart from one guy. I don't want to reveal much else because it's such a treat if you just let it all unfold. Really interesting premise for a tv show and there's lots of characters and genuinely funny moments.
Film: How to Blow Up a Pipeline. WOWWEEEEEEE! What a fucking wild ride! Was shocked at how political and radical this was for an American film. Lots to say about the environment, pollution, gentrification and capitalism. The girlies love a bit of eco terrorism that sticks it to Big Oil. Might be one of my favourite films I've seen this year. Proper Oceans 11 heist vibes with some excellent performances. My hands were SWEATINGGGG the whole time.
London: bit of an arty one on MUBI but I loved it! it's beautifully shot footage of London just after the IRA bombings in 1992 with a voiceover describing two old men walking around London and documenting the vibes through literary references, politics and events. Hard to explain but it kind of has Adam Curtis vibes? Very corecore TikTok trend aesthetic wise and it's v interesting to see a London that just doesn't really exist at all anymore. A beautiful time capsule, almost like watching a film of beautiful narrated postcards
