NO NONSENSE #42

Hey everyone!

The sun is finally out and we are back with another recommendations email! Here is the Polyester team’s favourite music, film and TV right now, from 80s horror to brand new albums – let us know if you delve into any of them!

Sihaam Naik – Editorial Fellow

Music: Big Ideas by Remi Wolf
I am such a huge fan of Remi Wolf, and her new album has no skips I fear. I have been listening to Cinderella on repeat, but Motorcycle and Soup are a close second. I can’t wait to see what she does next.

Book: Butter by Asako Yuzuki
I’ve just started reading this novel and I am gripped! It’s based on a real-life case of a gourmet chef convicted serial killer and a journalist who is assigned her case. What follows is a tale on misogyny, butter and my favourite- detailed prose on culinary secrets. I’m so excited to sink my teeth into this fully over the weekend!

Film: Possession
If you, like me, thought you knew everything about this movie from the repeated screengrabs on Twitter, please know you are WRONG and should watch it immediately - I’m so glad I finally bothered my arse to give this a watch, the performances are unreal and the effects had a Hellraiser quality which is my personal fav kind of horror!

If you’d like to read more on Possession, btw, here’s a piece (S'ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre) by Charlotte on the Dollhouse!

Book: Cat Person and Other Stories by Kristen Roupenian
The Cat Person discourse that blew up after everyone found out Kristen took some details from real life felt even more wild after reading this short story collection and Cat Person was my least fav story of the bunch. I love short stories and this book is such a great, gruesome and silly collection of horror adjacent tales.

Charlotte Amy Landrum – Platform Editor

Film: To Die For
One of the most underrated films of the mid 90s… Nicole Kidman is beautiful and evil and there is an extremely handsome and strange Joaquin Phoenix with an ear piercing HUBBA HUBBA

Lauren O’Neill – Copy Editor

TV: America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders
This is the new Netflix series from Greg Whiteley who also directed Cheer. This stuff is absolute catnip to me – the routines are obviously ridiculous to watch, the costumes are incredible and the stories of the cheerleaders are presented with so much empathy. It’s really really worth a watch, I’m enjoying it so much and eking it out so I don’t finish it too quickly!

See you next time!

XOXO,

The Polyester Team
