A recommendation: It’s What’s Inside
One of my favorite genre films of 2024 is now out to watch worldwide! Netflix has released the extremely clever and unique horror comedy creation It’s What’s Inside, which first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Written and directed by Greg Jardin, the indie film was shot in secret, made entirely in secret, and only revealed itself at Sundance in January. After another rewatch now that it’s on Netflix, I must recommend this brilliant film to everyone. It almost belongs in the sci-fi comedy or sci-fi thriller category more than horror, as it’s about a certain thing found inside a suitcase that someone brings to a pre-wedding party. No, I won’t tell you what it is, and the best way to watch it is to go in blind like this and find out as it happens. This concept is one of the most innovative and original ideas I’ve seen in any film in 2024 - the places it can go, the implications, the way his filmmaking uses this setup to intertwine and manipulate characters - all of it is so exceptionally clever. Yes it’s an indie and the whole point is introducing this concept on a small scale then playing it out amongst this group of old friends. And that’s enough! It’s gripping and funny and freaky. Don’t trust Forbes! Or anyone! Just click play and enjoy one hell of a fun new film unlike anything else you’ve watched this year. I raved in my review that this film is “something so new and exciting and awesome that you can't stop thinking about, and can't stop telling everyone they need to see it, and can't stop waiting for the chance to watch it again and figure out more of the tricks hidden within.” I love genre discoveries like this! It’s like coming across one the next big riveting creations that will go on to remain iconic for decades like Saw (also from Sundance) and I want everyone else to enjoy as much as I did at that first premiere. The real thrill of this film is not knowing what is coming next, being surprised by the whole setup, then being fully blown away by how far they take it and the places it goes as the story unwinds. There is plenty to think about it once it gets going… I have must compliment the cinematography & editing. The tricks with the red filter and split screens and spins to show who is who are all part of the brilliance of It’s What’s Inside. Smart and fresh - what a fantastic film. Thanks to Netflix, anyone can watch the film around the world now. Have a great time.
