Entering any new workplace can feel daunting, as you attempt to grasp the new social policies of your environment as quickly as possible. When it comes to entering the creative industry, particularly as a freelancer, this can bring extra challenges – as a work environment that frequently relies on collaborating with teams of new people on set, in the studio or on location, what is considered ‘professional standard’ or ‘socially acceptable’ can be ever-changing.

That’s why this week, as the summer draws to a close and new work opportunities await on the horizon, I sat down with my editorial team to think about the essential etiquette that exists across creative workplaces.

While these rules might not be written in stone, we recommend you think about them as guidelines to keep your professional etiquette on top form at all times. Especially when working on a freelance basis, a lot of work can come from word-of-mouth recommendations and repeat bookings with trusted clients, so it’s important to ensure you make a good impression and don’t annoy or disrespect the people that you’re working with, even if it’s by accident. 

And while we all might have that one email we regret sending in the heat of the moment or during deadline-induced stress, I believe that maintaining kindness, respect and a cool head at all times is one of the most beneficial ways to keep the jobs rolling in.
