Goodbye Charlie: Jamaica’s Push to Remove King Charles as Head of State

As the year draws to a close, I wanted to share one more story with you before we all settle into the holiday season. This one comes from Jamaica, a country that’s making bold moves toward a future free from its colonial past. Jamaica has officially introduced a bill to remove King Charles as its head of state and transition into a republic. It’s a historic moment—one that’s part of a wider movement across the Caribbean, and I couldn’t think of a better story to end the year with.

This isn’t just about a change in titles or constitutional roles; it’s a powerful statement of self-determination and a reclamation of identity. For centuries, the shadow of colonialism has loomed over nations like Jamaica, but moves like this are a reminder of the strength, resilience, and pride of the Caribbean people. It’s a story about independence 2.0—the next chapter in a long journey toward true sovereignty.

Over the last year, we’ve shared stories that have taken us from the powerful kingdoms of Africa to pivotal moments in the diaspora’s history, to the voices and movements shaping the present. It’s been an honour to walk with you on this journey of exploration and reflection. Your support means the world to me, and it’s what makes all of this possible.
