Students and farmers against the government

Dear reader,

This is our weekly round-up from Greece.

Students have been taking to the streets and squatting in their schools in protest of the announced privatization of higher education for the fourth consecutive week now. Legal scholars say that the government's plans to privatize universities breach the Constitution. Funds for state universities have dropped dramatically in the last 13 years.

There seems to be an orchestrated effort to demonize protesting students, with the PM himself comparing them with robbers. Some mainstream media have produced fake ‘students’ testimonies, in which they object to the protests, a report documented.

Farmers have also been taking to the streets, protesting the failure of the government to fulfill its promises and provide adequate and timely compensation for flooded areas. But their demands go further than that. They include the need to reduce production costs and a CAP reform.
